The Students of SMP Postgraduate Association (SOS) is a newly-formed organisation seeking to build and maintain a strong social and academic community for Higher Degree Research students studying with the School of Mathematics and Physics.

Our initiatives range from improving the day-to-day quality of life for HDR students and liasing with SMP staff on behalf of students to organising fun social and community events to help foster a sense of belonging within the School.

 

Some of our planned events include:

• social sports events and teams

• SMP Poster Night and 3 Minute Thesis events

• student-led and student-focused seminar series

• community coffee and pizza days

• barbecues, trivia nights, board game nights, and more.

 

We're a new association, so we'd love to hear from any and all students wishing to either join our executive team, or simply have their voice heard on a new initiative or a matter that’s important to them.

 

Our dream for the SOS is to become the guiding force for a friendly, SMP-wide community of students from all different disciplines and fields to come together, network, collaborate, socialise, and generally enjoy the best things postgraduate research at UQ has to offer.

 

We are also open to collaboration with the broader UQ HDR student community, so if you have ideas for joint events, please feel free to pass them onto the committee.

 

We'd also like to encourage all students to join the society, whether at an executive or student level – everyone in SMP is eligible. Our events will always be open to everyone in SMP, from undergraduate through to tenured staff.

We are affiliated with the UQ Union and the UQ Association for Postgraduate Students.
