The JKMRC Jackals is the postgraduate student association of The University of Queensland's (UQ) Sustainable Minerals Institute (SMI), one of the world’s leading research institutes dedicated to providing solutions for the global minerals industry.
Originally founded over 30 years ago by a group of passionate postgraduate students and alumni from the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC), the Jackals have since evolved to become a vibrant and inclusive community that now welcomes members from all six of SMI's research centres: JKMRC, WH Bryan Mining and Geology Research Centre (BRC), Centre for Water in the Minerals Industry (CWiMI), Centre for Mined Land Rehabilitation (CMLR), Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (MISHC), and the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining (CSRM).
The Jackals provide a collaborative platform for postgraduate students to foster academic, social, and professional connections. Through regular events, workshops, and networking opportunities, the association helps to enhance the research experience, facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration, and support students in navigating the unique challenges of the minerals industry. Whether through hosting industry engagement sessions, organizing technical seminars, or coordinating social activities, the JKMRC Jackals play an integral role in building a strong postgraduate community within SMI.
As the association continues to grow, it remains committed to promoting sustainability and innovation in the minerals sector, empowering the next generation of leaders and researchers to make a meaningful impact on the future of mining and resource extraction.
